Uh, two injection-molded housings, two injection-molded lenses, two circuit boards, each with 24 smd LEDs, and the manufacturer has to make a couple bucks, ship them to US, then the retailer has to give probably $10 of the $40 to ebay and paypal. $40 is VERY cheap.

In my opinion, that is.
my time is worth way more than $40. take my money.

fair enough. I don't know if the $40 kit has a fog light function which is what I'd only be interested it. looks only as bright as the parking lights. so yes I will be doing a DIY for a fog light rear function. 😁

These kits usually just have tap connectors to use the factory wiring without any cutting or rewiring. if you wanted a true rear fog that came on with the fog lights you would need to probably run a lead from the factory fog light harness to the rear. on my WRX i tapped the break lights so they were in sync. illuminated/brightened with the tail lights. a tail-as-turn module would have made the whole side light up with turn signals/hazards then too.

The short video in the ebay listing photos shows that it has 3 wires, so should have two light intensities- parking and brake. We'll see how bright each is- I ordered them and will post my findings.

I suspect even if you desire more brightness, it would make sense to purchase and cut open these inexpensive assemblies and use their housings and lenses to hold your laser-bright solution....

OK, following up on these ebay lights. Received the lights, finally received my car, and took some pics.

Lights seem high quality, although I'll probably add a little silicone bead around them where the front lens is glued to the rear housing.

The lights have two intensities, and although the pics don't make it obvious, in fact in person they seem very comparable to the brightness of the GR tail lights and brake lights. (The car was in direct sunlight when I took the pics, I'll maybe swap those photos for shaded views later today.)

(And as I looked at another of my cars in the driveway, I realized where Toyota sourced the reflectors for the GR!)

So did you reach a verdict yet on fit of the eBay LEDs?

Haven’t tried yet, but they look right. Got the car back from the detail place yesterday, so I might get around to it this week.

I actually had already bought what turned out to be the identical leds for my Prius wagon a year ago, but haven’t installed them either….

What?!? I was counting on you to be my R&D guy! 😁

@centerpunch any updates on these? I picked up my car on Tuesday! I'm ready to pull the trigger if these worked out for you.
Haven't installed them yet, but as I said, the quality seems good, although I might add some sealer around the concealed seam just in case.

From reviewing the manual, it looks like the rear tail / brake / turn signal lights use normal switching (unlike the headlights, which have only a power line and a data line going to them), so it should be easy to tap into the car's lights.

Any update/info on how the install went for these?

I'm assuming we have to pull back/remove the bumper? Reflectors are held in by screws I think...

And then gotta figure out the colours of the wires for ground/running/brake light

I installed mine by just removing some of the rear underbody panels and getting up in the bumper area. i then tapped the taillights for wiring. pretty simple actually.

I meant to do a writeup guide for this but never got around to it.

Heres the wires I tapped off.

Light > Car
Black to Black
Red to Red
White to Blue

this makes them work as running taillights, and brake lights.
