Well, now I have. I've decided to do some rallycross events next year. I bought the Eibach lift springs that lift the car an inch or so. That take me out of stock class and I doubt I'll be super competitive against prepared Subies, but really just want to have fun and not smash my car.

After reading the posts @86Zed wrote about his Braid wheels, I decided to look into those.

I contacted them via the BraidUSA.com website. I had posted on a few rallycross FB groups, and finally decided to go with narrower wheels for rallycross.

I have ordered 17x7 ET30 Fullrace A wheels, directly from the BraidUSA site. Since I wasn't in a big hurry, I chose to have them come in the spring in their next container, which meant free shipping. All the wheels are made to order, so you can spec whatever you want. They said they have supplied 17x8 and 17x7 with 30 offset, but I guess could probably do a smaller offset if you wanted.

The basic wheel price is $406, but I added several options.
Adding centercaps and machining so they snap in is $20.
Standard color is white, but you can specify other color for $112- I went crazy and ordered orange.
And there is a "beadlock" B option. This is different from the clamping type beadlock used by offroad climb trucks, etc., that use very low tire pressures. But they said this method is very effective for rally and rallycross driving. It's $154 per wheel. I think using narrower wheels will also help reduce debeading during the events.

For tires, I am still deciding between 225/50-17 Alpha rally tires.

Or maybe just some 215/55/17 snow tires. Whatever I decide, I'll probably order soon- it will be hard to get snow tires in April or May.
.
it would depend on the course, but you could get a way with rallycrossing on oem springs. a few have done so, and one was fastest of the day too. on 18" and snowtires. studded snowtires have a harder compound too. ofc youd rallycross w/o the studs in place. but the compound/tread is stiffer to keep its shape when studs are placed. gl hf!

After talking to a very knowledgeable rallycrosser, I ordered Cooper snow tires in 225/50-17.

I also picked up a minty set of 17x7 Lexus wheels. If I end up with two sets of 17” tires (snows and Alpha rallycross), I’ll use the Braid wheels (with the beadlock feature) on the fronts, and the Lexus wheels on the rears- almost any 17” wheel will fit on the rear. (They kinda look similar, both are 10 spoke design.)

I too confirm that Fast Tactic 17x7.5 5x114.3mm +30 offset with 60.1mm centre fit on the GR Corolla.

Thank you @SigOS for your post in this thread which helped me out a lot. I received "the call" in November and picked up my 2024 Core the week before Quebec's mandatory snow tire deadline and had to hustle to find a set of 17" winter mags and the last local set of 235/45R17 Hakkapelliitta R5s. 😌

I was lucky enough to find a Black Friday deal on the Tactics, shipping from a local dealer too.

Mounting/balancing notes:
  • the fronts are indeed squeaky tight, but all good so far with over 2000km on them
  • balancing weights need to be as flat as possible, and installed as far outboard as possible (functionality over aesthetics)
My tire shop didn't heed my advice, and had to rebalance the wheels moving the weights a few millimetres outboard so that everything clears.

Maintenance notes:
  • obviously there's plenty of room for these to fill up with snow & dirt when you're having fun going sideways, and the rears will indeed gunk up
  • there's enough clearance between the spokes that it's not too much trouble to clear them out with a brush/glove before the gunk freezes/hardens
  • they're much easier to clean than the stock Enkei mags with all their fine spokes
Here's what they look like in the snow after a half-hearted wash, which is probably as good as they'll look for most of the Canadian winter! ⛄

Like I said, squeaky tight, but it seems alright!

Completely agree with you, not all have same clearance. I can test fit one of my wheels it's just not priority at the moment, but I'd be interested to see as well. I will update when I do thought. I do know that the Hypergrams are Konig's highest clearance rim, this from talking with them directly when spec'ing my Supra.
I have a set of Konig oversteer 17x8+45, which were my 2017 WRX winter setup. I'm wondering if I can use them on my GRC with a maybe 10mm spacer.

And here's what the 17" Fast Tactic looks like in the rear after some spirited driving on snowy back roads:

It's like the caliper is carving itself out a cosy home. 😄

There's enough gap between the spokes that I was able to clear out most of the snow by (gloved) hand and it would be easy enough to finish the job with a classic winter brush.

Don't forget to check your rear wheels after snowy driving: imagine if that were to freeze in place!

P.S. The Hakkapelliitta R5s were great in the mixed snowy/icy conditions on those asphalt & gravel back roads. Predictable and yet still lively in 30:70. 😃

OZ Racing Rally Wheel (Gravel Spec)
17x8 +35

WILL NOT FIT

I tried every combination of spacer and at 25mm the wheel will possibly contact or have <0.5mm of clearance between the top outer edge of the caliper and the inside of the rim (barrel). It clears the spokes just fine, but the actual rim (barrel) is too narrow in diameter due to a reinforcement rib molded into the wheel for beefing up the rim for rally use. At 30mm of spacing a 215/60R17 tires is firmly into the outer fender lip.

A dedicated gravel front brake setup is required.

Still searching for a cheaper bomb-proof 17" option but Braid wheels are noticeably lighter than the O.Z. options. Apex wheels are beautiful but the shit streets and gravel here may tear them up
  • Braid FullraceA 17x8 - 20lb
  • O.Z. Rally Racing 17x8 - 25lb
  • O.Z. Superturismo 17x8 - 22lb
Correct me if weights are off, tough to find this information online
Check my post below. I can confirm the OZ Racing Rally wheels will not fit with stock brakes.

Thanks for trying! They do look awesome.

FWIW, I tried some WORK emotion CR Kiwami wheels in 17x7 and they didn’t fit. Guy didn’t know the offset, guessed +42, but I’m not sure they come in that. Doesn’t matter anyways as it was the barrel that limited the fit. Don’t think changing offset would impact that, but let me know if I’m wrong (very new to this).

Konig hypergrams 17x8 +35 will not fit (barrel is fine, but the back of spokes contact)

I didn’t realize until after my purchase and winters mounted 😵

if I get +20mm spacers and throw them on the front, will my car explode? I’d guess that I’d want them on the rear as well to maintain a square settup, but is that much spacer a problem for these cars? Does anyone have experience with spacers not having enough stud for good purchase?

At this point, I just want to drive the thing. Extended lugs will be a real PITA to mess around with in winter, outside.

Hey everyone! I know we were a little more active in this thread in the beginning and it looks like we disappeared a bit, but I swear that we've been active. Lurking, but actively so.

That said, we did want to share that we have our 17x8.5" ET23 SM-10RS Forged Wheels in stock and ready to go! While these were originally designed for SCCA Street Class, they're still a great option for those who want a direct-fit 17" wheel option that clears stock brakes.

60° Shank Lug Nuts are required. We're still working on an in-house lug nut solution, but in the meantime we have had success with these particular lug nuts and are recommending them until then: 60° Shank / Extended Thread Lug Nuts

That's all for now!

Nice barrel clearance! Better than my 8” hypergrams. Did you strip the paint on the brakes??
I don’t like red calipers, so installed a set of the oem black calipers (which are stock on the core cars without the performance package, and identical except for the color).

Mounted the 17x7 Braid wheels with snow tires for rallycross. Also installed Rally Armor mudflaps— actually mounted those on top of the Megachip ones. My thought is to install the Rally Armor ones when I rallycross, but remove them for normal driving.
