I didn’t want to cut anything so I just put the spare from a Corolla Hatchback and use a spiderweb I got from Amazon to hold it down. View attachment 27019

The Corolla hatchback spare will not work with the GR Corolla as the lug patterns are different. The E210 hatch has a 5x100 pattern and the GRC has a 5x114.3 pattern. Also, as mentioned, the hatchback spare will not clear the massive front brakes of the GRC.

I don’t know how cheap the hatchback spare was, but buying a tire that’s the wrong diameter on a wheel that apparently won’t fit the car is probably not a great way to save money.

There may indeed be inexpensive used 17” spares that will work on the rear of the GRC, but you need to test fit them. (If you had a flat on the front, you’d first put the spare tire on the rear, then replace the flat front tire with the good rear tire.)

1) Tire diameter should ideally be within 1/2“. I guess 1” might be ok.
2) Bolt pattern must match. 114.3x5, which is 4.5”x5. Many cars use that bolt pattern.
3) Offset must be compatible. I don’t think this should be a problem. (But it might be.)
4) AND the center bore of the wheel must be big enough to fit over the GR hub. I’m pretty sure Honda, Nissan, Ford, Hyundai, and Kia wheels have larger centerbores than the Toyota hub, but Subaru has smaller, so those won’t fit.

I’m guessing that maybe some Camry, Accord, Sonata, or Optima spares might work.

Maybe.

But if $350-$400 for one of the aftermarket spares is too much and you find another possibility, be sure to test fit it!

The HB XSE spare was free. I took it out of the one I traded in. But looks like I got to bite the bullet to buy one.
Just buy the Modern Spare like I did and pick up the jack and tools for almost nothing. I did the Modern Spare since it was the exact same diameter as the OEM 235/40R18 tires. https://amzn.to/45efxmf

If you want to save some money the Value Spare is $120 cheaper at $240 but it is one size smaller. I know I want to go to a 245/40R18 tire so I didn't want to be 2 sizes smaller. If you stick with a 235/40R18 you could be just fine. https://amzn.to/3Va9s5p

U guys think a 155/70 R17 from a Corolla cross would fit? At least in the back? I worry about the brake calipers. I could just do two swaps if the front ones were deflated. I’m not in the US and don’t want to import a spare tire. It’s surprisingly hard to get an R18 thin rim.

It being a 155 it might not fit in the back under the mat I imagine.

I think it will fit as there is some room to play with and you can see if it works better with spokes up or down. I actually like the idea of this size spare as I think I would put the spare on the rear no matter what, even with the 18". This could be a good option for people here in NA too.

So, I bought Mr Centerpunch's car a few weeks ago. Yesterday I ran over a nail & before I could do much about it, the shop that tried to plug the tire said I had already destroyed the tire itself being underinflated and driven on. Luckily this spare was in the hatch, they bolted it up, checked the pressure, and I drove it home trying to stay under 70mph (because spare & being Mr Safety) but still ended up at ~75mph at times (in my defense the car is fairly quiet and rev happy). No issues at all, handled perfectly and was damn glad to have it.

So the flat tire that’s being replaced temporarily would still not fit under the tray, correct? I’m only asking because I’m likely going to load the hatch up, and would need to account for the extra space in the event this would happen.
Correct... the full-sized tire is much wider than a temporary spare so it is not going to fit flush under the cover.

It’s larger than what is used for the eyelets. I’m not sure the exact dimensions though as I was able to rummage around in my miscellaneous bin and find one that would work.

One thing I don’t think I’ve seen mentioned before about cutting out the foam to add a spare is that after you do that the floor of the hatch area isn’t held in place as well and tends to bounce and make noise over bumps. If you look at the underside of the floor there is a little hook that engages with the foam so once the foam is cut away there is nothing for it to engage with and hold the floor down. It’s a little bit annoying, but I haven’t gotten around to looking for a better way to secure it.
