So has anyone changed their transmission gear oil and rear diff oil yet? These are the oils I plan on using and I just need to double check that they are the correct ones for the transmission and rear diff.

1. Engine Oil - Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-20 I checked with Pennzoil directly and it meets all of the specifications.
2. Transmission - Redline MT-LV 70w/75w
3. Rear Diff - Redline 75w-85 but not sure if it should be the GL-4 or GL-5 version. Any ideas?
I just did engine, transfer, and rear diff at 900 miles. I used Toyota fluids and filter. I opted not to change transmission this early. Engine oil looked new. Transfer and differential were black and had copious amounts of metal filings on the drain plug magnets.

I've used all those fluids. the rear diff and transfer use the same fluid and it's gl-5

There are two different Toyota part numbers for transfer and rear diff. 08885-02606 Gear Oil LX85 for the rear diff. 08885-02506 Gear Oil LT 75W-85. The rear diff oil lists @ $82.85/liter and the transfer oil is “only” $42.75/ liter.

LT is for non-limited slip while LX is for limited slip applications, but redlines 75w85 gl-5 meet the requirements of both. since I'm changing these more often then most people, I'd rather not pay the OEM tax

I just got done with my DIY 1K mile oil change. Only did engine oil, didn't see much of a point in doing differentials because I'm not planning on tracking anytime soon.

If you're planning to DIY it, make sure you have an oil filter remover like the one here, especially if you're only using a floor jack. They torqued the fuck out of the filter at the factory, so it took 30 minutes and 2 different filter removers (not like one in the link) to get the sumbitch off. There's very little space to work in.

Perfect, thanks for the tip. I do already have that exact same tool. And I also have a lift to make things easier. 😍

I just did my fluid change around 1k miles with amsoil fluid. The engine oil and rear differential are a must at 1k. I can confirm that both fluids are very glittery. The engine oil condition is still better than a FA20/FA24 at 1k mile oil change.

MTF wasn’t too bad, you can get away with changing it later.

Question for you. I use this oil filter wrench to remove my Toyota filters and it fits the one for the GRC too. I love it and it makes it very easy to remove oil filters. Have you tried one of these? It's always made it easy to remove hard to remove factory oil filters.

my transfer case fluid was also glittery.

sadly I completely forgot to catch the oil for 2nd oil change to send to analysis 😭
Hey, at least you did it early and you did the second oil change already??
I am curious if we can run a taller toyota oil filter on this car, I hate how tiny 90915-YZZN1 is.
Maybe 90915-YZZN2 or 90915-YZZF2?

yeah, im on the spec 0w20 and the engine has direct injection. there's a reason our service intervals are 5k miles vs 10k of the other toyotas. after an HPDE I always swap the oil and oil filter, it's the harshest conditions you could put the engine through. so it's just for piece of mind. also, with a smaller capacity rear diff than what I'm use to, I'll prob change the fluid after 5-8 events vs 10 on the IS. same with the transfer. might as well do the transmission too 😅

a taller filter won't do much besides increase the capacity of oil, if that. but as long as the outside diameter and psi relief pressure is the same. you should be able to run it.

Good to know. I like using the taller 90915-YZZF2 on all of my cars since it has more filtering capacity. What Amzoil products did you use for each area?

Thanks for the info. It's interesting that Amsoil uses a heavier 75w-90 oil for the MTF. I've always had excellent results with Redline MT-LV 70w-75 as that is the weight recommended for Toyota MT since around 2010. My 2009 and 2017 Corollas use it.

So what about the diff/transfer case? It calls for a 75w-85 GL5 but the Amsoil is 75w-90 and I didn't see it listed as a GL4 or GL5.

If you look in the tech bulletin it shows that it is applicable for GL5 usage. I looked a bunch into differences between the 85 vs 90, couldn't find anything that suggested you couldn't use the 90. Figured I was doing more benefit than harm by swapping earlier either way.

So I've seen some videos and pictures of people showing their oil and drain plugs metal shavings after the first oil change also their oil was super black. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones but just finished up my first oil change and there were zero metal shavings and my oil hadn't even darkened in color like at all.
Edit* forgot to mention mileage 1274 miles

Anyone else's first oil change like this?
Maybe those folks who had those shavings/black oil were beating on their cars vs breaking them in?

I know color doesn't 100% say whether your oil is good or bad.
Forgot to save a little bit to send off for testing but next time I will be.

My oil was only slightly darker than fresh oil when i changed it at 619 miles. I thought i could see the faintest hint of almost a metallic dust in it when the light caught it just right, but that could have been my imagination.

I also cut open the oil filter and saw nothing of interest there.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the oil level and color and all seems normal. I’ve got about another 1,500 miles before i hit 5k and do the first normal oil change. I’m planning on doing a drivetrain fluid swap at that time as well.

I can't find the GR yaris on amsoil aus, but amsoil EU actually recommends a heavier weight for the transfer/diff...
