My oil was only slightly darker than fresh oil when i changed it at 619 miles. I thought i could see the faintest hint of almost a metallic dust in it when the light caught it just right, but that could have been my imagination.

I also cut open the oil filter and saw nothing of interest there.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the oil level and color and all seems normal. I’ve got about another 1,500 miles before i hit 5k and do the first normal oil change. I’m planning on doing a drivetrain fluid swap at that time as well.
Drivetrain fluid swap? As in diff fluid, transmission fluid, and coolant? That's necessary for 5k?

is everyone sticking to 0w20 generally speaking or are we bumping that bitch up to 5w30?

oil is one of the most controversial topics on any forum (especially bobistheoilguy). so I'm wondering if there's going to be some de-facto guide for this motor that people have seen with the Yaris

I would run 0w-20. The tolerances are very tight in modern engines, and the film strength is more than enough when it’s running in very fine clearances.

Having said that. I just did my first engine and transfer case change with PP 0w-20 and AMSOIL SG 75w/90 at 580 miles. I was going to wait until 621 miles, but I had some time this weekend and wanted it cleaned out.

typical fine metallic dust in both, with black sludge on the transfer case magnetic plug. Nothing out of the ordinary, and it should be gtg until the 2500. At that point, I’ll be doing all fluids, as well as MTF and the rear differential with Toyota gold and the Cusco rear diff cover.

Not required at all per the manual, but something I always do on new gears and such. In my mind they take a little longer to wear in than the engine, so i don’t do it at 500-600 miles like the first oil change.
It never fails to have some murky fluid and a lot of stuff stuck to the magnets (if there are any on the plug), so i feel like I’m doing the drivetrain good by getting that out of there. The fluid swaps after that (I do 25k mile intervals) usually look like new fluid with no cloudiness and almost no material on the magnets.

Edited to add: no i don’t do coolant then, just the diffs and trans.

So I've seen some videos and pictures of people showing their oil and drain plugs metal shavings after the first oil change also their oil was super black. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones but just finished up my first oil change and there were zero metal shavings and my oil hadn't even darkened in color like at all.
Edit* forgot to mention mileage 1274 miles

Anyone else's first oil change like this?
Maybe those folks who had those shavings/black oil were beating on their cars vs breaking them in?

I know color doesn't 100% say whether your oil is good or bad.
Forgot to save a little bit to send off for testing but next time I will be.
If you are referring to your engine oil, most of the dark oil was seen in the diff/transfer case, not the engine or transmission oil.

Sticking with 0-20 until more definitive data comes out. Will take it 5k miles at a time. It's not like I'm choosing for life.

Difference of running one oil vs another might be a 1% difference in the long run (as long as you do them frequently).

I can't find the GR yaris on amsoil aus, but amsoil EU actually recommends a heavier weight for the transfer/diff...

so I contacted amsoil USA about their lack of recommendation for the GR Corolla transmission, transfer case and rear diff. I actually got an answer that I also thought was an error.

so I responded with the amsoil EU recommendation page I posted here. and how the GR yaris and GR Corolla share similar engines, transmission, transfer case and rear differential.

I got this response.

Very interesting. I've been using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and I emailed them to make sure it met the requirements and it does so I'm good to go for the engine oil.

Phew. I finished my 1k mi engine oil change this evening. As always, it didn't go as I planed. My super old floor jack became too wimpy to lift the car. So, I had to improvise.

The left tire on a curb and the right side lifted with a scissor jack. It did the job.

Why not get a set of ramps? They make changing oil a breeze. This is what I use for a quick oil change.

I just did my fluid change around 1k miles with amsoil fluid. The engine oil and rear differential are a must at 1k. I can confirm that both fluids are very glittery. The engine oil condition is still better than a FA20/FA24 at 1k mile oil change.
I just did my engine oil at 1k and can also confirm that it was very glittery. I’ll have to get some diff oil to do the rear diff too.

So are people just changing the engine oil and rear diff at 1k miles? Or are they also changing the transfer case and transmission gear oil too? I'm just now at 900 miles so my first oil change is be coming fast.
I did transfer case along with oil and rear diff. Opted not to do transmission oil.

Yeah I just did some searching. I have a feeling they're going to argue about it when the time comes for a change though. Here's the standard brochure since most cars only require 10,000 mile oil changes.

Confirmed right now, as good as my sales experience was it appears that the entire service dept is attempting to refute the 5000 mile oil change recommendation as yesterday I had three people from the service department patronizingly explain to me that they downloaded the maintenance manual and they assure me that I'm misreading mine and that the GR Corolla most assuredly only requires an oil change every 10k.

Which is, you know, frustrating because as they tell me this I'm sitting there staring at the maintenance manual we all got which very clearly states the interval. I'm waiting to hear back from my service manager's "regional contact" after sending him scans of the manual from my vehicle.

Imagine someone didn't read their manual and just did 10k oilchange for a few years. That engine could get absolutely screwed pretty fast if you double the oilchange interval.

Btw even the oil interval sticker they put on my windshield declares a 10k/1 year interval.

even if it was 10k/1yr. I would not think about doing that for a regular Corolla, let alone a GR. but even I know the maintenance manual says 5k intervals. funny enough, I took a look at my parents rush GR sport's maintenance manual and its 6k km! (3728mi) 6mo interval. that thing only makes 107hp 😂

Do Canadian GRC buyers get any free oil changes?
I mean we do live in a harsher environment than most US buyers.
I'm not holding my breath, since Canadians did not get the heated steering wheel, when probably some US owners in Florida and southern California did.
Another thing Toyota does that makes no sense.

All new Toyotas get 2 year free maintenance. It’s an incentive to get people to buy Toyotas. Not sure if Canada gets ToyotaCare.
