He wasn't at fault and he paid MSRP for it. The trucking company has to make him whole. If it costs $45k to get a 3 package GRC due to everything being marked up, they owe him $45k.
So what happened since you sound like you know the details

He (left lane) was passing a semi truck (right lane) on a 4 lane divided highway. Semi truck merged left into him (pass side damage) and pushed him into the guard rail on the inside (driver side damage).

Honestly, as frustrated as they may be, unless they already have tons of money invested into it, I'd just let them total it and wait for a new one. Yeah it'll suck to be without one for a little longer but that re-sale value will be awful in comparison.

Now obviously not many people drive cars thinking about when they go to resell it, but I'd think this is something to be considered at least twice before making a decision.

Are we talking about the same vehicle? I’m guessing you’re talking about the black one. I’m curious about the red one

He's talking about the black one.

I didn't get gap on my car. Is it worth it due to what these cars are selling for? I do plan on adding it when I refinance. I'm not sticking with Toyota finance. I need to find a better APR, and lower payment. 1 of the 2 will do

I've never gotten gap on any of my cars. Typically because cars "usually" depreciate, if your car is totaled early in ownership, you may owe more than the market value of the vehicle, which would put you underwater.

I've always known the risks and opted not to get it. After a couple years, it doesn't provide any value anymore. I'm not sure how the crazy market today affects its usefulness.

the internet says if you work through your insurance they can add gap insurance for as low as $20-$40 per year, which seems reasonable, so if it's something you want, tell the finance guy no, and get your insurance to add it when they are doing up the paperwork for your car.

Well looks like that black one got totaled.
It was confirmed a few replies ago. I asked if there was an update. Pretty sad for such minimal damage.
Depending on price that might be a good buy. I'm still betting suspension components are totalling them out. They probably aren't available since they don't cross reference with standard Corollas. And the build numbers just aren't out there yet.
