I can't buy into that. An insurance adjuster's job is to make the insured whole again for the least dollar amount possible. They have guidelines to go by, and every insurance company has a threshold where they will total the vehicle. Typically that threshold is somewhere around 75 to 80% of the value of the car. If they believe there may be more concealed or unknown damage, they may total it at a slightly lower threshold. Rental cars are nothing but play money for them, and they don't care that much how long the insured has to be in a rental waiting on parts. If the damage estimate isn't at or above that threshold, more often than not, they're going to fix that car, and just keep the insured in a rental while waiting for parts. It's all about the dollars, and the adjuster's job is to save the company as many dollars as they can.
