This is just an example, and I know nothing about car audio, but was wondering if anyone had considered a spare-tire subwoofer? That's what my Mazdaspeed 3 uses from factory, and I love the idea of solving two issues at once.
Such as:

Has anyone ever thought about possibly a roof basket and keeping the spare up there? Probably not a typical hatchback thing to do but, its just a thought coming from the 4x4 world.
Ew. No.

Wind noise, aero drag (reduced mpgs), raising center of gravity, and increased heat exposure (or even worse, UV if tire isn't enclosed) reducing tire life are all horrible reasons to go with a roof mount. In a pinch or for a short trip, sure. But permanently? God no.

As opposed to the other 4 tires that are also outside? The cabin A/C isn't going to be doing much for something under the trunk floor. When the car is parked, which is most of the time, it's just going to be the same temp or higher.

You're arguing that the tires on the car, partially covered and perpendicular (roughly speaking) to the sun get the same UV exposure as one mounted flat on a roof? Beyond that the 4 tires get UV exposure via being used as their tread wears down. The spare tire would just receive unnecessary UV exposure while not being used, drastically shortening it's life. Driven regularly, and enthusiastically, average life of the driven tires will be in the 2-3 year range. Spare tires are usually kept 8+ years.

Just seems like a pretty obvious negative to me. Especially in addition to the other items mentioned. 🤷‍♂️

Anyone who’s not willing to cut the styrofoam should just use the collapsible Maserati spare tire, which fits great on the floor behind one of the front seats.

Link #1 in my signature.

I'm saying that a tire on the roof isn't going to receive "increased heat exposure" compared to one stored in the cabin, and definitely not when compared to the other tires that are on the road.

If you're worried about UV exposure throw a cover on it, though I'd doubt that will be an issue either. Most people aren't killing tires that quickly and they're fine, and every Wrangler is sold with the spare tire sitting on the back in the elements and it's fine. You'd probably have more problems from water pooling on the rim and rusting it, especially near the bead.

I got a wheel from ezspare, but the lug nuts were only 4 turns on back (likely due to spacer) which is lot less than minimum recommended of 6-6.5. I wondered what experience was with the value spare (steel) and modern spare?
That ain't right- don't use that. Have you contacted them?

Our cars have spacers in the rear, but I'm sure the studs are lengthened accordingly, so it shouldn't be a problem with properly-designed wheels and lugnuts.

Did the ezspare come with lugnuts?

I really don't love their "universal" bolt pattern strategy, the other two sources seem like a better choice (for links, see post #2 in this thread).

From what it looks like it post #2(not sure if the pictures are accurate) valuespare has a regular bolt pattern while Modernspare uses a universal bolt pattern. I would also like to hear from anyone who has used either one. Im looking to place an order myself.

Uh, if you would take a minute and scan through this thread, you'd see that post 46 is from a guy who successfully used valuespare, and post 64 is from a guy who successfully used modernspare.

My bad, I've been reading the option #1 and Option #2 and missed it.
Well, sorry about that- you're probably right- there are really too many posts to expect folks to read through all of them.

Tonight I'll make a new thread with a single post that explains ALL the spare tire options. Maybe the mods can make that thread a sticky.

Can do. If you edit the first post in this thread I can sticky the current one too.

I'd just sticky the new one, it has all the info anyone needs.
