The new M2 is here. It's 3800 lbs, 454hp, and manual. Thoughts? (Also I think this and the GRC would look good in Isle of Man green)

Seems like the review embargo is lifted. What do you guys think? I was waiting for reviews for a while now and was thinking about putting down a deposit along with the deposit I have on the CT4V Blackwing and just taking which ever car comes first. The looks have actually grown on me. It's not the best looking, but that side profile and massive fender flares look pretty reminiscent of 80s widebodies, which were considered ugly back then too. I'm more or less neutral on the exterior design now.

But after reading and watching a few reviews, I've cemented my decision to just stick with the Blackwing. The M2 is 3800 lbs now, which is only 50 lbs less than the Blackwing, and has less utility. Plus I just feel that BMW's design philosophy is tech-future-forward rather than true, useful functionality. I mean, look at that hideous dash/infotainment iPad. I can not express how much I fucking hate that dashboard. Holy fucking shit. If all new cars of the near future are going to that kind of dash, I don't think I'd ever buy a new car ever again. God it's so stupid and ugly. Excuse my language. I just really, really hate that lazy design.

The lack of physical buttons being replaced by 'apps' is such a huge turn off for me in a performance vehicle. I would tolerate it in a boring CUV or similar, but I feel that in a performance vehicle, especially a true M product, functionality should always come first.

Driving wise, I guess it's still M. Can't fault it for driving dynamics, because it does seem to be a great driving car. But I just think it's so gimmicky overall. It's everything else that makes me dislike it. Drift mode? 19/20 inch wheels? Cross-drilled rotors? I guess it's typical German accoutrements for cars in this class. Audi and Porsche do it too. The interior is especially gimmicky. How many damn M color stripes does the M2 need? If the seats weren't enough, the door cards have illuminated M color stripes for whatever reason.

Overall, I prefer the Blackwing's no-nonsense all-business approach over this new M2. I really hate what modern BMW has become and the new M2 epitomizes it.

Never been into BMWs but it seems like the new M2 is too refined in ways compared to the outgoing car.

The new M2 starts at only $63,195.
Dare I say only $13,000 more than the Morizo Edition Corolla.
The M2 in my opinion is way way more car for the money than the GRCME, but it just doesn't look good to me. Too squared off.
I'm sure it would be a blast drifting it around a racetrack, and destroying the rear tires.
Looks like BMW copied Hyundai's WRC teams rally paint color here.

Bit of a mish mash that's for sure. The front intakes remind me of my kitchen sink.

Not my cup of tea for something that will cost NZD$175,000 over here.

Available in like 5 colours, one of which is the Hyundai Blue, are BMW still pissed much that Albert Biermann left them ?

Got to give them points for putting up the info on the car way before its even available.

^Your comments are a little amusing, in the context that when the BMW 1 Series came out it was considered the ugliest car they made. And really, it was true. Back then BMW actually had attractive cars. I think the 1M is a big improvement over the 135i, but still isn't really much of a headturner, especially compared to it's peers from the time. Not discounting your opinion, just pointing out the overwhelming consensus at the time (and probably still).

This car is ugly with a capital U. And 400 lb heavier than the previous M2 (at debut it was right around 3400 lb, gained 200 lb at mid-cycle refresh).

Remember when BMW sold (multiple) coupes that weighed less than a V8 Camaro? Now they sell...zero. Sigh

When the E92 M3 came out I remember thinking - oh c’mon a 3600lb performance car WTF.
Now that’s the lightweight CSL and the WTF number is creeping up towards 4000.
Love that the GR86/BRZ got a second generation. Really considering one if the GR Corolla reviews keep giving me the “this thing is kinda sedate” vibes.

It's absurd. So much unecessary BS exists in cars these days. Even the GRC. I could do without the adaptive cruise (radar module) as well as Blindspot detection (sonar modules) plus I think I read adaptive high beams? Which uses a forward camera, typically above the rearview mirror. All those associated modules and wiring could be removed for weight savings.

We don't get the pleasure of ADM's in Canada, that's saved for the gents in the good old US of A.
The land of the free, right? That's what I keep hearing.
