This is what i was really looking for! How about gear 5 and 6? I will compare it to what @vietataru posted and his/her post also seems to indicate the RPMs which is good. Need to review this in detail.

I was starting to believe that Toyota did not have it in the manual since no one else mentioned it...maybe not everyone reads the manual!! :--)

We are picking up the car on Monday and don't have the manual yet. We have a ~300 mile drive back home and wanted to follow the guidelines for switching gears and breaking in. I will try to skim through the manual as well before starting the drive....

For breaking in, i had found another post which had the screenshot from the manual for breaking in so basically just try to behave and don't get too crazy during the break in.

@vietataru I am curious if you have seen the manual and what was the reason for you
5 and sixth bring you up to ECU limited top speed of 243km/h

Not sure if i follow...so 243 km/h should be ~150 mph which i presume is the top speed that the car can do (with the speed limited in mind).

Knowing Toyota, there should have been an explanation on what speed to maintain in 5th and then what to maintain in 6th -- as we transition from 4th->5th->6th (going from 114mpht o 150 mph)...or I wonder if they did not mention it in the manual due to legal reasons in the US.....

again this page is still MAX speeds.
You will NOT find what you are looking for as these engines are optimized for driving and the quick changes in rpm they are to see throughout they're service life.
They are not designed for keeping a speed and an rpm for hours on end on the same gear.
We usually see what you are looking for in Trucks, Heavy machinery where each gear is designed for a certain operating speed.
This car is simply created to NOT think about rigid stuff like this.
This car is made just to enjoy the road WITHOUT looking at the speedometer and instead just hearing the engine breathe!(it does need more sound tho)
When you get the car just enjoy it!

by the way the manual is available online on Owner’s Manuals and Emergency Response Guides - Toyota Canada

Thx for sharing the manual. I am looking for the max allowable speeds for each gear which the manual seems to have provided but is missing for 5th and 6th and I wonder what the reason for that is.

I already told you the reason. The ECU is limiting the top speed to 150mph so you cant really reach top speed legally with 5 and 6.
And the reason is USA. In japan the top speed is 154pmh again limited by ECU
The car can do more if the ECU wasnt limited by Government agencies. just with an ECU alone you can change the engine's character and add up to 45-50hp

Are you implying that since legally you cannot reach the top speed of 150 mph so this is why the manual only goes up to 114mph?

What?
114mph? where does that # come from? the car goes to its ECU limited top speed of 150mph but the gearing is longer than that. Meaning that if you swap the ECU you can go faster than this but this is not legal on the roads.

To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:
â—ŹFor the first 186 miles (300 km): Avoid sudden stops.
â—ŹFor the first 621 miles (1000 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration. • Do not drive continuously in low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

See post #18 from Kuro5ake. It has the screenshot from the manual which shows the maximum allowable speeds. It only goes up to 114 mph.

I was able to download the manual and see the same on page 135. No mention of gears 5 & 6.

But we told you about 5th and 6th already. The ECU limits speed at 150mph in both

The ECU will limit the speed at 150 mph. How about between 114 mph and 150 mph? Which gear would you be in when driving between 114mph and 150mph? I presume it will be in 5th once you are at or over 115 mph but at what point would you switch to 6th ....

whenever you're coasting!
Dude you are worrying wayyyyyyyyyy too much about a weird little detail that doesnt matter that much.
Sounds like your wife will enjoy the car a lot more.

Yep, i can be anal about details.. similar to the OEM that we are purchasing the car from... ;--)

i think the main open question now for me is the recommended speed to be in for 6th gear for daily driving. i may reach out to Toyota if i cannot find a satisfactory answer elsewhere.

I miss the old Road & Track road tests in their printed magazines. They showed many aspects that gave you an idea of how the car runs and drives.

Interesting how those speeds in gears 1-4 are exactly what one of my favorite cars from my early driving days. That car was a German Opel (similar to the car in Boy Swallows the Universe) with huge webers, camshaft. I may just have to get one of these after all…

yea, planning to take advantage of the courses offered through NASA...would be fun to understand the details of how the GR runs/drives.

You definitely should. I did mine at Willow Springs - Big Willow and boy oh boy was that super fun. I was highly impressed by what this little corolla can do.

in 6th is really when you're cruising on the highway.

All modern cars are designed with ethanol mixed fuels in mind. Just use 91 octane or higher and your car will be fine. The port injectors will help with the issues that purely direct injected cars can have. I can't even get gasoline without ethanol in my area above 89 octane. I agree on the Italian tune up from time to time though. Can help with some build up.
Ethanol free gasoline is also a bad idea on performance cars, anyway. Ethanol reduces cylinder temps and helps prevent detonation, meaning you can advance timing more and make more power.

The manuals used to supply recommended shift speed in addition to max speed, but I haven't seen it in any recent cars. This is from my 2000 MR2 manual, and I remember something similar for my '88 Subaru XT(my first manual)
