17" wheel thread

there's sparse information in various places, so I figured maybe those of us interested in going with a smaller diameter wheel, maybe we consolidate what we know?

fitment of a 17" wheel is going to depend on the barrel of the wheel clearing the caliper, but also the spokes clearing the caliper, in addition to the normal clearance issues that might happen with suspension bits, or body parts.

so maybe, as we confirm 17" wheels that fit, or don't fit it can be posted here, along with the standard specs? wheel size, including offset, and then also tire info, if applicable.

there's this thread on the GRYaris forum that has:

braid fullrace A: 17x8 +27
TE37 17x8.5 +40

they also recommend stone scrapers on the calipers so as not to damage wheel barrels when a stone gets stuck between the caliper and barrel. that same thread says RPF1 and Rays CE28n both at 17x8 do not fit, but don't mention any offset

So these seem to be a cheap lightweight option that should clear (they clear the GRY brakes and those are the same).
Konig hypergrams in 17x9 with either a +25 or +35 offset at around 17-18lbs per wheel.
At about $1000 for a set of 4, pretty affordable. Relatively well known brand of wheels, don't know how they would hold up to track duty though.

The lower the offset would just be for looks bro... So, just like circuit edition only owners, you would be a poser if you went with lower offset wheels. Higher offset wheels on the other hand are for guys who care about performance, you know the same guys who would only go for the core trim of the GRC.

🤣😂🤣😂
I kid I kid....

Hi Everyone, new to the forum and my GR Corolla. Figured I'd be able to give a bit of good input here. In my own pursuit of optimization, wide-lightweight rim searching, purchases over the years, and coming across APEX's reply on 17" wheels earlier in this thread; here's my .02. Side note before I get started, I've always been a fan of Enkei's RPF1s, but unfortunately their spoke design location limits clearance for larger calipers.

#1 try not to use spacers, if one is searching for an autocross or track wheel especially, which also may be indicative of the wide size requested - maximizing tire contact patch pushing to the limits. Otherwise, you don't need such a wide tire on the street. Hard parkers enter chat lol. No, but seriously they will just tram line on typical city streets and will certainly kill your mpg if you're into that.

Here's the sauce...not trying to harp on APEX, though if you are set at 17" and say, "maxed" at 10"; APEX stated their VS-5RS 17x10+48 (17.4lbs ea) works upfront with a 5mm spacer; likely the same spec rear will clear the caliper. With this option add (est.) weight of .5lbs for the spacer...not ideal. Answer is Konig Hypergram, 17x10+43 (weighing in at 17.9lbs ea). Likely matching weight and you could go further with lightweight lugs. Hypergrams have been rigorously tested on track by race teams and grass roots motorsports, are one of the lightest wheel for this width, lots of space for oversize calipers, and affordable ~ you won't be crying too hard if you curb them. I use these on my A80 with slightly difference spec; they are great, won't find lighter and stronger wheels that perform imo; sans RPF1s. Cheers!

Have you test fit these? Not all 17" barrels are created equally, and that's the main issue with fitment on these cars. I've got one set of 17s that the barrel scrapes the caliper, and the ones we're using for DS (motegis) need a spacer to move the barrel taper away to clear. Without the 5mm spacer, would need to use clamp on weights.

I love the hypergrams on my ND, so not a knock on wheel, just a comment on how tight 17s can be on this car.

FYI Braid is having a special fall/winter arrival group buy now through Braid USA - applies to any wheel/fitment, saving the cost of shipping by getting in on the bulk USA import.

Ordered a set of 17" Fullrace A for my GRC winter setup

Any updates on 17" wheels for the GR Corolla? Please share pics & specs!

Love the Konig Hypergram! Considering 18x9.5 size actually so I can run 265/35-18 tire...

GR Yaris above in British Racing green looks so good!

Looking to run a 215/50R17 winter setup for my GRC. Anyone have thoughts or experience with the Enkei TS-V?
215/50r17 is recommended max rim width of 7.5, so you'll be stretching them a bit.
The Enkei appear to have conical seats for lug nuts, so you could run into stud length issues. I don't know whether they would clear the brakes or not.

I just saw this, thought it was interesting, and confirmed what I have noticed going from one size to another. Probably even more convincing after a bad pothole!

They don’t get too technical, but it isn’t hard to imagine how the diminishing slip angles are going to be different and affect the braking into corners.

yeah, those articles have been ruining wheel discussions for decades.

in every test (even when they say they are 'removing variables') they go with a wider tire, as well as going plus size.

in every single test, in addition to plus sizing the wheel, they add more contact patch for grip, so really, these tests are actually testing the ability of going with a wider tire.

I would submit that every ounce of better performance was gained by going with a wider tire, rather than having a taller wheelset.

had they kept the same width of tire, while going with a plus sized wheel they would have seen no gains, and possibly even losses.

Just FYI even if 17" fits and has decent clearance, once you go into snow/dirt there's a very high chance stuff gets caked inside the barrel of the wheel and ends up eroding the paint on your caliper. I assume most people are trying to put 17" tires for snow/rough roads/daily purposes and it's exactly the conditions where you have a chance of eroding the paint. This is exactly what I thought with my previous car and the calipers got some cosmetic damage.

One would need to make a wheel scraper to run it safely. That also comes with additional risks (namely, trapping rocks and creating a bigger problem)

Thanks for the heads up. Ran -1" wheels with minimal clearance on my GTI and Golf R without issue for multiple years in the Midwest winter mix.

Obviously not all brands, wheels, offsets, etc. fit the same. Luckily the Yaris folks did a lot of the legwork for us (Yaris image, not my GRC)
