Communication Module Activation Failed

So yesterday on a little road trip I noticed when I turned my car on I got this warning message “communication module activation failed”. I didn’t pay it any mind and thought that I was in a crappy service area with no bars so it might be telling me that I might be limited on data related stuff. Welp, it started happening every time I started my car after that. I did a bit of googling and saw the “fix” was to disconnect the negative terminal for about 30 minutes and that should resolve the issue. Well after a 1/2 second of popping the hood and realizing the battery is in the back I disconnected the battery. I’ll post an update to let everyone know if this helps in the GRC, all the other posts were about RAVs, Venzas and Siennas.

Update: leaving it disconnected for 30 minutes didn’t solve the issue. I was able to fix it by doing the following:

1. Remove all devices & profiles from the infotainment system
2. Remove the vehicle from the Toyota App
3. Disconnect the battery for an hour (leave your liftgate open, if you close it with the battery disconnected you won’t be able to open it from the outside)
4. Reconnect the battery
5. You should hear “Communication Module Activation Complete”
6. Add your vehicle back to the app if you want
7. Pair any device you want to the infotainment system.

I’ve been living with this error message for three solid years on my 2022 Toyota Corolla. I have tried disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes, for one hour, and for four hours, with no success. I’ve checked the fuse box and disconnected supposedly the ones that were Linked to the activation module. I have done just about everything I know to do. Tonight, while sitting in my driveway, I opened the Toyota app and simply removed my vehicle, then went to the notifications page and un toggled every single notification that was available. I then close the app Turned off my car and got the “activation module complete“ message. Hallelujah and praise God, this is the solution I needed. No need in my case to disconnect the battery. I hope this helps someone. I have conducted endless searches and just about gone completely mad until tonight. What an enormous weight. Until tonight… What an enormous weight lifted off of my tortured soul!

I have this message for three weeks now on my 2020 Toyota Corolla. I disconnected the battery to no avail. The Toyota dealer in Fort Myers charged me $200 to analyze the computer and the day after he called to tell me the DCM (?) has to be replaced at a cost of $1,500 !!!. Could not even tell me if there would be any harm to my car if I don't replace the DCM. I just want to get rid of that message ! I'll try to do what usapt97 did and hopefully it will work for me too but I can't believe I would have to pay an additional $1,500 to the $200 I already paid just to erase the message.

I lived with the message for 3 years. Even made an appointment at Toyota and took a half day off work. They spent 2 hours with the car all to tell me they didn’t know what to do. One night about 3 weeks ago I was sitting in my car and decided to uncheck notifications in the Toyota app. I also then deleted my Corolla from the app. This fixed the problem. I hope it works for you
