I think the CTR is used as a status symbol, whereas the GRC isn't, per se. People will buy the CTR for the badge, whereas those who keep the GRC keep it for the drive.I noticed this too!!! Something I actually think is weird is the CTR itself also has had these crazy markups long before Covid and it’s accepted for the most part.
Though the GRC is AWD, doesn’t have fake engine noise, and rides better, I also see more people dumping their GRCs more than CTR owners.
Having a FWD tRaCk wEaPoN as a status symbol is like rocking a junior varsity coatI think the CTR is used as a status symbol, whereas the GRC isn't, per se. People will buy the CTR for the badge, whereas those who keep the GRC keep it for the drive.
As far as the 2 products go I’ve seen similar community discussions between the CTR and RS back when that first released, which is weird considering everything.I think we talk about them merely because Savage Geese in their ultimate fanboyism diss GRC’s for the sake of undying fanboy love for Honda. As much as I am dissing here in fun I actually usually do not give most Honda’s or CTR’s the time of day normally . The thing about Honda boys though is they do go on endlessly about their cars being the best thing since sliced bread . Hence why Savage Geese has eagerly earned the moniker. Though they are definitely the ones fanning the flames on GRC’s morso than anyone else and doing it with comments about how superior the CTR is. We only mention them because I feel a lot of us are just sick of them…..well at least I am🤣
P.S. if not ther member posted another Savage Geese vid it would not be soon enough.
That doesn’t make sense because people wouldn’t dump the GRC as often still. I agree that the Type R badge has more history and has a obsessive cult following behind it, but I’ve also noticed that the GRC on release just doesn’t have the same continuous energy like the WRX/STI or EVO did.I think the CTR is used as a status symbol, whereas the GRC isn't, per se. Yeah that didn’t make sense to me.Having a FWD tRaCk wEaPoN as a status symbol is like rocking a junior varsity coat
I think this is spot on. The lack of an established brand/recognition hurts the GRC especially in the upper market. As far as the 2 products go I’ve seen similar community discussions between the CTR and RS back when that first released, which is weird considering everything.
The SavageGeese doesn’t bother me because most of the disgust comes from what went on at that event. There was a lot of BS between content creators, Toyota reps not knowing things and so on. That’s per a member here who went. Kinda why there’s so many similar inconsistencies, like Topher praising the car but still got a CTR.

RS was another hot hatch forbidden fruit. Finally came here and didn’t have that energy really. Can’t explain it.
The only place I see overlap is in the troll factor of taking a reliable commuter and making it a factory performance car.I actually noticed a lot interesting things between the 2 cars.
Like how we talk about them, yet they don’t really mention us. 😂
Objectively it’s bigger space wise, shifter, track capability. But like stated above it’s mainly the heritage is more defined. The only place I see overlap is in the troll factor of taking a reliable commuter and making it a factory performance car.
Now that I've read though this discussion it makes me wonder... what is the Type R good at?
THIS.We have to give them credit for proving how overrated the CTR is (unintentionally).
Their timed laps on the same track with the same tires with the same driver on the same day showed that both cars are fractions of a second apart.
All that "racing pedigree" didn't amount to jack shit lol.
Was that with a circuit? Core or morizo? I don't remember the times, let me go dig for it.We have to give them credit for proving how overrated the CTR is (unintentionally).

Naw I think people misconstrue what they feel towards the 2 cars because some of our group is a little sensitive towards criticism. They always cover exactly what makes the Corolla great, while there’s some people who refuse to understand WHY they were turned off.THIS.
I don’t think people here are even that defensive, I think they have such a hard time understanding the criticisms because they’re so inconsistent.
The entire SG saga of hate makes no sense.
Dude loves it on backroad driving, then as soon as a non-Morizo basically ties his beloved CTR on track, it’s the worst thing ever.
They have honestly looked panicked trying to tear the GRC apart. “Let’s bring out instrumented audio system testing on this track comparison episode.”
Then they PURCHASE one, and pour waaaaaay more money into it than the CTR, basically implicitly saying a CTR is not worth modding because FWD, and then keep pouring hate all over it.
You get the sense they wanted something that was gonna get toasted on track, which is why they included an S209 in the test, so they could feel special and advertise local tuners by modding it up to CTR levels.
They wanted it to be a non-threatening little brother to the CTR, but it instead almost upstaged the one-trick pony while also being 20% cheaper and having two more driven wheels.
Means something apparently because people are still buying the overpriced things and keeping them, while others are dumping the GRC.We have to give them credit for proving how overrated the CTR is (unintentionally).

I don’t think turnover is indicative of a less desirable product, especially in a first generation.Naw I think people misconstrue what they feel towards the 2 cars because some of our group is a little sensitive towards criticism. They just don’t like how the Corolla is an afterthought and how that is reflected through the media events talking to company reps and driving the cars.
With Toyota’s history the GRC fits the same mold as other in house performance options. Usually Toyota gets inspired by some other car, works on just everyday fun driving characteristics and will actually take something away to add character.
After looking at old videos the GRC launch was a bigger version of the RCF launch and everything that came with it. 😂

As stated earlier though it’s the story that probably drives public perception the most.
I didn’t say it’s less desirable or debating on which is, I’m just saying the people buying the Type R pretty much know what they’re getting and they keep it for that reason. Just an answer to people talking down on whatever the CTR is.I don’t think turnover is indicative of a less desirable product, especially in a first generation.
People probably didn’t get what they expected, which is more common because they didn’t know what to expect. Also there is some financial incentive to flip in the current market as things appear to be cooling.
If the plans of these manufacturers is to build one-to-few, production numbers really should reflect a combination of demand + the ratio of how much they actually value enthusiasts/want to look out for dealers.
GRC - ~5300 for US market (only manufacturer that even release numbers)
CTR - ~4000
Golf R - ~2500
The reason the most people seem to be mad at Toyota for “not producing enough GRCs” is because it’s the one that most people want.
SG doing SG...The GR has AWD, a manual park brake, shorter wheelbase, weighs less and is a better AutoX car from what I have seen (both personally & reviews). I live in a snow/rain area and will drive the car in winter. It was a no brainer for me.
I have nothing against the savagegeese review. I just think they put A LOT of weight on the track performance.
It's all personal opinion, brings me back to the EVO vs. STi days.
