"Fresh out of Japan, Best Car magazine has confirmed the new MR2 is slated for an official release in 2026, just as it was previously speculated.
What's news, though, is the information that the new amidship coupe will get an all-wheel drive drivetrain equipped with Toyota's brand new 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with horses delivered via a six-speed manual 'box or an automatic to the tarmac.
In terms of design of the MR2, the baby blue car seen on the right side of the rendered image is believed to be very close to the final production car.
On top of that, Best Car also reveals that the MK8 Celica (which is the canary yellow vehicle to the left of the image) will likely debut at the same time as the MR2 and get the same engine but mounted upfront under the hood/bonnet with power sent to all four wheels just like the above-mentioned amidship coupe.
In the same set of renderings, we are probably looking at the new Celica in its final production form as well, which apparently takes on the shape of a grand tourer (GT) in the manner of a 3-box profile as opposed to the MR2's purist sports car stance and packaging.
If this assumption is true, it will mark the return of the classic body style for the Celica nameplate. The sedan-like trunk/boot first debuted on the MK1 coupe.
Interestingly, the new Celica also pays hommage to the MK1 liftback - in the form of three vertical light bars from the rear lamp clusters.
Indeed, 2026 is looking good and bright for Toyota fans and all combustion engines lovers."
