A few months ago there were rumors coming from Japan about the GR Corolla having as much as 296 horsepower (220.6 kilowatts or 300 metric horsepower).

But with the recent teaser photo that Toyota shared that number could be around 268 hp, similar to the GR Yaris.

I'd say Toyota USA is going to pick a horsepower number that is largely based on marketability. Either match or exceed that of the next gen WRX (271), GTi (245), etc.

268 is certainly a good number that lands right in between. Basically matching the WRX. I'd love for a 296hp version but considering Toyota's current model marketing strategy, they will launch with something competitive like 268 and keep the higher horsepower variant for a special edition 2-3 years down the line to keep the model fresh.

I remember seeing that Aiko was teasing the GR Corolla and saying that he wanted it to have the same performance as the GR Yaris which led to the thinking it would have more power closer to 300hp. I don't think the 268 in the photo means much since it was the same in the original photo.

At the very least we know that 268 hp is going to be the bare minimum. Which is a great place to start at. There's no way the GR Corolla would be less powerful than the GR Yaris.

Also Toyota plays the numbers down. I think the Supra was 335 hp the first year and some ppl were dynoing at like 360-375. And hp is just a number torque wins the races.

According to the Toyota staging site, we can expect 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft torque from the 1.6L 3 cylinder engine.
