MSRP mark up...

18606 Views 114 Replies 43 Participants Last post by  noogie
So we have to be weeks away from hearing a release date as well as an MSRP for our long waited GR. With that being said, my question here is that I have read and heard many things about Toyota Dealers planning to mark up price about $10k over MSRP on the Corolla. I've also read articles that state Toyota has said they're going to do their best to NOT let dealers mark it up over MSRP. So what should we do when it comes time to buy the car and we see that mark up? Do you eat it? What do we say to the dealer? "Hey, Toyota said you can't do that, and if you do, I'm going to tattle on you". Like how do I walk into the dealer and tell them they can't mark up the car like this without risking loosing my spot. Can they actually take my spot? What are y'alls opinions on this? I have a hard time justifying the purchase of a 45-50k Corolla lol. I'm in Georgia, if that matters for anything.

Toyota won't be able to prevent dealers from ADM. Call places and find one that says no ADM, put a deposit down, and hope. Anything else is 🤷

You talk to your dealer, you agree on a price above, or at MSRP, then you fill out papers saying that, then you sign, and pay a deposit. And then you wait.

Look at Nissan z markups and z06 markups. It’s going to happen unless you’re willing to sacrifice your place in line to hold out for msrp or find a dealer that agrees to msrp right away

This.

I bet that Toyota dealers selling GR Corollas will mark them up as much as $20,000 to $50,000

Then they'll simply rot on dealer lots. Only people that will buy a $20-30k marked up Corolla will be a desperate YouTube reviewer or a multimillionaire to whom money doesn't matter.
I'll immediately back out and start looking into European brands.

There are people in here that openly admit they'll pay whatever it takes to get the car. 😂

They still float around here too but haven't said anything in awhile.

I would make sure you get an agreement to no or little ADM on that receipt for "separating a unit" or whatever your dealer calls it on theirs.
Honestly these dealerships have ruined a lot of these fun cars for me. First it was the FK8 markups, now with the GRC certainly next in line for crazy markups it’s tempting me to say screw it and buy a Tesla Model 3 Performance.

Yeah they just make you pay more AFTER you buy the car. Want more range? We accept Mastercard and Visa.

I want a car, not an app.

Meh I’m only interested in chasing times during autocross and time trials, street driving does nothing for me anymore.

I’m really curious about the GRC for an STU build. Especially with the ability to adjust the power distribution to account for track conditions.

I tend not to care what propels my vehicle as long as it gives the performance I need when I need it.

Chasing around for a non-marked up Civic Type R was a nightmare in 2021 and I simply gave up. I hope this is less of an issue with the GRC but keeping my expectations low. The GR86 or Elantra N are alternatives I have on my radar if nothing works out with the GRC this year.

To be realistic... that answer comes down to each individual.

Mark-ups WILL happen. The few MSRP dealership already (or will have) a long list of buyers already in line. So, their wait periods will be much longer. And with a production run for a few years, it's more than possible to get pushed so far down the line, that you could wait 2-3 years and miss it altogether.

I've seen minivans marked up $10K... a non-special minivan. Trucks, cars, etc. Everything.

The main thing to do is be able to separate yourself from a want. We all want the car. I personally though am not a person that can be pushed past his threshold for what he wants... I simply will let it go. I LOVE sneakers... I never pay to resell. If I miss a pair, that's it, I'm not paying triple on StockX.

There is an amount I am willing to play with or except for an added price, which most likely gets tossed under Dealer Add-Ons. However, $10,000 is an absolute... NO. I will simply hang up the idea of a GR Corolla and go get another car I like and move on. Even $5,000 is heavily pushing it. The only way I would allow that amount depends on if it's a dealer add-on I could possibly find some value to the car (i.e. tint, film protection, ceramic. etc.). But, just a cool $5-$10K added on top, just because they are still touting "chip shortages"?

I'm good. Nice car, but I will sleep perfectly fine at night leaving that car on the lot if pricing becomes stupid.

I like the shoe reference because it’s true. People are so infatuated with having something new first, they’ll act crazy just to have it. As much as they say “I don’t care what people think” they do. Lol

There’s a certain high you get when you post a picture online or go somewhere and be the first to have something.

Then when everyone has it and the newest thing comes out, it’s on to the next one.

there should be plenty of WRXs avaliable 😄
Funny enough I already see some people getting WRX's after giving up on the GRC and CTR. lol. Regardless of the looks its still a bargain for all those who claim that they NEED AWD. 😂

Agreed, I think it's a great car. I've heard it drives well and the aesthetics can be cured with a nice spoiler and painting the cladding. I read the other day that their sales are lower than last year, so anyone wanting to avoid ADMs should definitely check it out.

I have an 8-year old accord that still looks and runs like new, so I’m sitting pretty with this as a want. I’m In the same boat as Mr. Biggs - I don’t need a car right now. They’ll lose me at “…and then the ADM….”. My local dealer usually does the extra floor mats, etc, but has never done ADM.
