Agreed, if it's not fast than a Mazda3 or the Elantra that's a bit of a letdown.

I couldn't care less about faster 0-60 in a little hot hatch. It should have proper steering and a dynamic chassis + AWD system like the Yaris.

The Hyundai N cars are shipping with fantastically tuned steering racks and world class chassis'. The CTR is well documented as being a fantastic FWD drivers car. The Golf is okay, just does everything well. It's a tough completive space beyond just spec sheets.

The GR Yaris accomplishes all this and more, but a Corolla with a drivetrain swap guarantees none of that. I've autocrossed and tracked a few Corolla XSEs and they don't hold up, but they weren't designed to either. This needs to be a real concerted effort by Gazoo to make this car really reward the driver.

If you need it to go faster, tune it. Assuming they don't lock the ECU and leave us hanging like they did in the Supra...

That’s something I always wondered too. With all these people assuming the GRC is going to be a rally car…. It’s not, as far as we know they’re taking some tech from the GR Yaris and using it to turn a Corolla into a track ready sport compact, which like you said, isn’t guaranteed.

Knowing Toyota too the car will be engineered to give it some quirks to give the car character, in the process it might not be as fast as the competition it faces or as refined per se. So it’s safe to say it won’t be the FASTEST like people wish or the best handling, and that alone for years has been the thing people criticize about Toyota.

like you said though, if the dynamic chassis is there, and people understand that Toyota for the most part try to make memorable cars, not numbers cars, then they’ll have a winner.

I predict a lot of people will be disappointed expecting a straight up crazy car.

The Japanese philosophy has always been feeling and reliability. That dependability with the AWD is what'll make the GRC different. Given how well the GRY feels, I have no doubt the GRC will feel good and fun to drive. So even if it isn't the quickest, there isn't a doubt in my mind it'll be a dependable, fun to drive hatch

Yup, you hit the nail on the head there. Toyota's best cars are always a holistic experience - full of personality, but rarely world beating in any one way.

Many of us haven't driven the GR Yaris (same goes for me) and it's important to be understand that this new GR Corolla is very unlikely to be better than the Yaris. The best we can hope for is a car that is equivalent to it (or slightly worse). And the GR Yaris by all accounts is quirky and fun and an all around joy of a car to drive, but it's not faster than a Civic Type R. But I'd take a GR Yaris over a CTR, and I bet likely would take a GR Corolla over a CTR even if it's only 90% of the Yaris experience.

That’s true to an extent but that’s why people also critique Toyota like I said. Look at every cool Lexus for example and people like them but they always bring up some competitor.

Like Guff said, just because the Yaris is great it doesn’t mean the GRC will have similar dynamics and things. As far as we see, Toyota is focusing heavy on the track use (rookie racing) and everyday driving which is great to us, but to others maybe not

Yeah I guarantee when the GRC comes out it’ll have the “Lexus affect” where people say “yeah it’s cool but….”

Considering the Type R is probably going to be revealed the same time as the CTR you’ll REALLY see comparisons.

I'm more assuming it's going to be a rally-car because leaks have spoken of a "rallye edition" and Toyota even had the camo prototype rallying in the dirt in the background and the 2nd round of teasers had a normal Corolla racing through the dirt. The main reason is because the GR-Four system and G16 were built for rally and if they plan to use the same exact engine, trans, and suspension, why would they make it more streety? I'm sure it'll be less hardcore than the GRY of course but even if it is more of a track/street car, I'm turning into a rally car haha

It’s possible, we’re making our assumptions off rookie racing and what has been rumored. It’s all speculation until the official release.

beauty of a sport compacts is they were used for whatever you want. GR Corolla will definitely be a canvas for enthusiasts more so then the Yaris in my opinion. The GR Yaris is already a stubby, thoroughbred, homologated rally car.

Yes I think this car will make a great rally car, autocross, time attack, or just some track laps what ever you are in to it will do all of them well I believe

I'm hoping the dealer really honors his word to sell the GR to me near list price. If he tries to jack me up 5 or 10k, I'll just go a little more and get an AMG GLA35 or maybe the AMG GLA45 should I have a moment of insanity.

You missed the AMG A45S and the Audi RS3 in the table but I don't think you get either of them in the USA. Even the GR Corolla is going to be country specific, looks like the UK and Europe are NOT getting it.

Both of these will not need any modifications what so ever but price wise I'm picking the GRC will be half the price.

That's the thing, the GRC is not a bespoke rally homologation special like the GRY. My opinion is it's mission is to be the ultimate sporting expression of the humble Corolla which is a different design goal with different parameters.
