Detuned FWD GRY apparently in development with an automatic slushbox and FWD. Gross...🤢🤮
My guess is it will trickle down to the GRC as well, probably priced in the high 20's to low 30's.

Yikes. An auto GRY / GRC would be really interesting, especially as it seems they're developing a new AT gearbox specifically for this application.

But FWD and detuned? Hard pass.

If they want to sell more than a few thousand a year it will need an automatic.
An entry level hot hatch w/250hp and available manual and LSD might sell. Then GR-C and GRC-C PP.

Hatchbacks are almost sales proof in the US, but some hot hatches do OK. See Golf vs GTI and Golf R.

GRC is also planned to have an auto too, so sales should balance out across the range

Don't they already have something like this in Japan? I think it was called the GR Yaris RS or Yaris GR Sport or something like that.
Not really, that car only shares the body with the GRY. Other than that, it's a 1.5L FWD with a CVT. The one they are talking about in the article will have the G16 motor, except it will be auto and FWD.

I mean it does make sense. If Honda and Volkswagen can successfully make a high performance compact model/hatch, a 30k detuned one will do well.

The detuned engine would essentially be a Yaris motor though
And Subaru. There's a reason we see WRX's everywhere

Gotcha. I missed that this one was using a G16.

As Jeonsa said, you called it.

Are YOU our secret insider??

I think the complete opposite. FWD and detuned aren't so much of a problem for a lower price car, as long as it has a front diff. Polo GTI and Fiesta ST have proven that FWD with ~200hp and diffs in a small car is a valid formula.

The manual is a huge deal for these cars, as the whole point of them is fun and engagement, not outright performance.

I think the order of things I'd care most about in a sub 30k hot hatch would go manual > diffs > AWD > power. As long as power doesn't dip significantly below 200hp.

Ugh, Carbuzz🤮. The Japanese website they quoted, Mag-X, has lost a lot of credibility and views among the Japanese over the years because many of their rumours turned out to be totally inaccurate or just straight up baseless nonsense that they pulled it out of their a$$, so every now and then they will publish the kind of rumours that they know will rile up people to get extra views so that they don't go down under.

The one that you can somewhat take it a bit more seriously is Best Car, but even then some of their rumours especially the ones about high performance cars are more like what they hope will come true rather than based on insider info that can be trusted, that's why some people started to call them Best Wishes instead lol. Their rumours about normal vehicles tend to turn out to be quite accurate though.

Where does GR Corolla fall under? Because Best Car's render of the GRC was shockingly as accurate as one could be.
