For those coming from a VA sti.... what are the expectations?

I sold my 19 sti in Jan after I put a deposit down on one of these. Picked up a low mile miata nb to bridge the gap and check off a bucket list item.

Loved the sti. I don't track. Just a lifelong enthusiast. I live in and drive on mostly northern ca sierra mountain back/hwy roads. While the drivetrain in the sti was magnificent, I could never get over that it felt bloated compared to my 2011 wrx hatch.

Been extremely anticipating this car and the only time I have felt apprehensive was watching it in the TH review and lanch next to the sti. I know they are not straight line cars and I don't race from the stoplight. BUT the sti felt heavy/sluggish to me from day 1. That said it was the best year round mountain car I have ever owned.

For anyone coming from subaru, what are your expectations?

This is honestly the biggest reason why I've held off on buying a new car and my biggest hesitation on the GRC. Steer-by-wire is definitely much harder to get right and for the most part is much more numb, and steering feel is probably one of my highest priority. The new 86 is the only car that I've driven with electric steering that I was happy with, and it contribute a lot of that to the front-engine/rwd layout and light weight, neither of which the GRC doesn't have.
I had a VA WRX and the steering in the GRC doesn't really feel any less communicative to me, personally. Then again I did have a GV70 in between the two which didn't really have much feeling at all, so that very well could've thrown me off some.

Your WRX didn't have hydraulic steering.

Only the STi did? I was actually wondering about that.

Correct. Only sti used legacy parts. The cancelled 2022 VB Sti was supposed to be the modern sti.

I have waited to put 2000 miles on the GRC before commenting.

The GRC is a better car on paper and to own overall, in my opinion. But I miss the connected-ness of the STi. GRC is numb.

The STi steering is better. So is the shifter and awd feel on tight rutted out backroad turns in heavy acceleration. These types of backroads to get home, and the STi felt better, more connected, and stout.

The STi was a dog though. Too bloated and felt heavy. I like the GRC more overall for my needs right now, but I find myself jumping in to the miata from time to time now. More than I did when the STi was in the garage.

All good. Happy to experience them all. Wish I could keep them all too.

Which model MX5 do you have?

This is helpful. My biggest complaint from my STI test drive was how lethargic and heavy it felt although the inputs were pretty nice overall.

I still think out of the cars I've been able to test drive the FK8 Type R has been my favorite. Really need to get my ass in a GRC to compare...

Take a look for any used GRCs in your area. May be a bit more accessible and less concern for the dealer to let you add a few miles.

I was able to find one that let me drive after a quick bank account verification.

I liked the car a lot. Felt exceptionally high-energy and had a lot of the je ne sais quoi I have been looking for. Interior sure is a bit sad though.
