Food for thought for the guys who want to run open filter intakes

So I installed my CE hood last week and was able to install my water channels on the underside of the hood today. However after I installed them I got to thinking about the fact that these are designed to channel water that’s collected in the hood vents to pass the oem intake and down into the engine bay. However these open element designs were done before the CE was released so they don’t take into account that these vents exist. I decided to pour some water down my drivers side vent (the only one that matters) and see where it lands. On my prototype intake it’s Landing just behind the new breather or on the lid. However some of these intakes like the MST with their open boxes are going to be like nice buckets collecting all that water and pushing it DIRECTLY under the filter which is inhaling air and potentially water.
it would have to be a significant amount of water to cause issues but food for thought On those looking at open intakes with the CE or CE hood. Car washing without drying or a major rain storm would be 2 areas I’d be a bit uncomfortable with.

I’ve long wondered about those vents myself in heavy rain. While driving, not so much, but it’s a factor. The bigger issue is when the vehicle is parked. So I’ve questioned the functionality. Non CE hood, you don’t have to worry about rain water cycling through the engine bay. So even now I don’t even know if the venting of the engine through the hood vents is worth this trade off. Especially, for people who are going to drive in all sorts of inclement weather. I’m not buying an AWD hatchback to drive it only on fair weather days. If that was the case I’d go RWD.

the reason the circuit was delayed was because toyota couldn't figure out how to stop water locking the g16 every time it rained

they have a new warranty in place for this, luckily, and you're able to swap 1 motor a month for the first 5 years

Agree. But if it leads to hydrolocking the motor with an intake, it’s cheeks!

I'm super on the fence about getting one, I kinda want to see what the aftermarket brings.

Ideal hood would be bulge + single continuous air vent. There were some renderings up before the CE came out, think it looks way better.

it takes a lot of water to hydro-lock an engine, you could run a front facing turbo with no filter in a downpour and still not get enough water in the combustion chamber to hydro-lock the motor

A lot of overreaction in this thread. It takes A LOT of water to hydrolock. Think of the water sucker the dentist uses in your mouth. Doesn't really do much unless you close your mouth around it. Same thing here.

Also I could be wrong, but I'm 95% certain the hood vents have removable blockers.

Hence why I said “food for thought”, “car wash and heavy rain specific” and the rain blockers are what is causing the channeling

being serious tho, unless you are literally driving into an actual body of water, it is extremely difficult to hydrolock a motor. you can pour water or dunk your intake filter into water and still not have an issue

what is bad is if you were to pour water directly into the intake/throttle body. too much and it'll fuck shit up, especially at low rpms

tl;dr - the amount of water coming into the engine bay or even hitting the intake filter through 2 small vents in the hood is not even close to enough

With the car on an aggressive wheel setup it looks great. But seeing the CE at my job all stock it kinda reminds me of those who skip leg day.

You can actually "steam clean" an engine by putting a vacuum line in a cup of water (if someone is actually interested in this, please look up a how to video on it and don't just go off of this post). Point being is that I agree in that a couple of drops, or even a small constant stream, on an open filter isn't going to hurt anything. That said, I wouldn't want it to be happening on my car.
