Engine died on freeway. Check engine light illuminated.

GR Corolla with PP, TP, CW, 720 miles on the odometer and engine fully warmed up when this happened.

I was accelerating full throttle in second gear on a freeway on-ramp when power tailed off a little over 5k rpm and warning messages popped up (engine malfunction). I switched into third but had zero power so I pulled off to the shoulder. I turned the engine off and then restarted it. No warning lights were visible and it seemed to drive normally at that point, though I babied it. On the seven mile drive to the dealer the check engine light came on. There's a alert message in the system to saying "malfunction in the electronic control of the engine, throttle or automatic transmission." After stopping again the check engine light is no longer visible. Dealer wont be able to look at it until Monday so I drove it home where it's sitting right now.

I finished the recommended break-in period last week and had an oil change at the dealership on Tuesday. Since then I've driven it ~80 miles before this happened today. I've only floored it a couple of times since new and never brought it all the way to red line. This was probably the most stick I've given it and I was pretty surprised when it died.

I'm curious if anyone has had similar experiences or has any advice.

This is the closest thing Ive heard to what you got going on:
That sucks! Hopefully the dealer takes it seriously, keep us updated.
Update. Took it to the dealer and the shop foreman pulled the code. Apparently some kind of ECU communication issue. He was of the mind that I should continue driving it and hopefully it was a one time thing. Not exactly thrilled, but I think I'm just gonna hope it was a hiccup and continue enjoying the car.

My customer had the same message on their 2023 Camry. It was an ECU error. Took 2 visits to handle but it eventually was fixed. Hope the same 😬

Fixed how?
Took 2 trips, ECM ISSUE. Had to trade them into another vehicle since they were mad and didn’t trust it anymore
Any recalls yet? Looks like several new Toyota models have similar issues with the ECU. My Corolla XSE so far has been fine. Maybe cars post 2022?

No current recalls on the GRC. Same with the Camry but there are 3 complaints unrelated to the ECU.
I would report this to the NHTSA and see what happens.

Not engine related, but after driving some 50 miles on the freeway, my hood released itself at around 70 mph. Luckily the latch still held on and I was able to exit.

I came looking for this thread after encountering a similar issue yesterday. GR Corolla with 4400 miles, all packages, after an hour of normal highway driving.

I'm at a highway stoplight, the light turns green, and for fun I floor it and shift to 2nd just as I hit redline. I've done this several times in the past, no worries. This time, the engine loses power and fires unevenly as my check engine light comes on, followed by that same message as the original poster, "malfunction in the electronic control of the engine, throttle or automatic transmission." I gradually lose power and pull the car over to the side of the road before I cause trouble for the people behind me. After sitting there for a moment deciding what to do, I roll the dice and shut off the car, wait about 10 seconds, then restart the car.

Everything's worked fine since, including two additional hard launches. I have a track day coming up Saturday, and I'm hoping I don't see a repeat of this issue.

This same exact thing happened to me, pushed it a little in 2nd gear and it fired weirdly, shifted to 3rd with slight less gas and the engine cut power with a check engine light…. Pulled over and shut her off and back on and car acted normal. Kinda sketchy.
So this is at least the 4th person this has happened to in the GR Corolla? At least mentioned on this forum from what I can tell... This isn't good for Toyota. Rise and Lavish, have either of you taken your cars back to the dealerships to see what they would say?

Got an appointment tomorrow for them to take a look. So far car has been acting normal but I also didn’t want to push it too hard in case the car died out again and would leave me stranded.

I haven't yet. I'm due for an oil change next week, and I'll mention it then.
UPDATE
After inspection, having 2 cylinder misfires. Yay 🤣 they’re going to look more into it over the weekend.

I recently got a pending P0300 code (multiple misfire detected), but car drove fine. Hopefully it’s just bad gas (used BP).
