Diode Dynamics SS3 MAX Fog light retrofit

1686 Views 33 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  djbert
Stock fog lights are junk..so I am upgrading them. Diode Dynamics makes a SAE complaint fog with MUCH brighter output and better beam pattern.
Fun little project, I'll update as I complete it.

Scanned the OEM bumper so I can create a flush mount bezel.

Template for cutting. Big light.. tight fit.

CAD designed, resin printed(TESTER ONLY) final will be PA12 nylon

Perfect

New VS stock

Incredible how things can be done like this now. Ever try making a form from your 3d prints and doing carbon fiber?

I wish I had a scanner like that, I have so many projects it would save time on.

Look at an einstar if you want an affordable scanner.

Bump because I want to follow this thread.
It looks good so far!
Want to share your file for the bezel? I could clean up my SS3 drive light install!

Wish I had gone for the Max over the Pro for my high beam assist, but it seems like overkill for a fog!
Could you possibly share a "blank" style file without the cutout so people could install other styles of fog lights in there too?

It must be a generational thing, but I think these go completely against the design direction of the vehicle being square and orange. It seems like most people are trying to replace yellow lenses with clear…so I can’t see what look You are going for. Is there a pic of the rally car or vehicle look you are going for?
‘Also, can you print in black? Even in flat black it would make the final product look more upscale and less after thought. I applaud your abilities to make these changes.

this is to replace it for a higher output light. the headlights are aimed like shit to begin with. these would help on a night run. also, heres a link that explains why we replace the clear with yellow/amber:

No specific rally car I am modeling after. I just want GOOD useable light.. which now a days are usually in square pods. I personally think the square lights flow better with the vehicle lines. The design of the GR has many sharp angles and 90° corners which help them look more natural. I would say they fit the grill curves better than the stock round ones.
Yes, final bezel is black. Actually gloss black to blend with the CE grill.
There are many benefits from a yellow tinted lens when used in fog applications... Many articles out there.

I was actually very impressed with the cutoff and beam pattern of the SS3 so figured I’d give them a shot!

Damn, you made me look.
Don’t get me wrong a thousand dollars isn’t cheap but in comparison to scanners that can do similar scans. It’s a steal.

If you order direct from the website they don't add sales tax, and there are bunch of $50 off coupon codes, so $939 shipped. Ebay had a warrantied refurb for $835 at one point.
But you may also have to budget for some PC upgrades, it looks like it wants a stout PC.

I’ve only heard good things, just haven’t tried the DDs myself yet. I’m sure I will at some point though!

Of course I did. I’m perfect and never miss any detail when having casual discourse.

The OEM fogs just look too tiny, I can only think that Toyota wanted them to match the size of the headlight projectors. Without the square bezel the octagonal SS3 light blends a bit with the grille pattern.

I assumed the OEM fogs were from the Toyota parts bin.
