I've never had a car before that produces this much brake dust. I guess it's just the price of admission.

Those chamfers are to help reduce squealing by preventing brake dust buildup on the leading edge. Different manufacturers have different methods (angles, placement, etc) as you can see, but its all for the same purpose. They don't affect the braking performance at all.
edit- or if you're talking about the notch on the backing plate, I don't think it affects anything, maybe just a manufacturing step to attach a wear indicator. I'm pretty sure that area of the backing plate doesn't even interact with anything, it just hangs there.
