Recently noticed a problem with what I'm guessing is the exhaust valve? Its a deep, wavering exhaust tone that comes on when I'm in 6th gear, going from around 77-85 mph on the highway. After or before that range or any other gear it is non existent. Also, while in that range it correlates with throttle position. So if i let off throttle it is immidiately gone, and quickly comes back as throttle increases. Sounds like its trying to get rid of backpressure for the turbo but isnt consistent. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Edit: looking around online at other car forums it sounds like it may not be an exhaust issue but rather a transmission/differential problem? Just sounds deep like an exhaust tone.

my 2017 tacoma does this with a downpipe-back exhaust, at certain RPM ranges when under load. A tune has reduced it for the most part, but i still hear it once in awhile... hrm...

Assume this does it under heavy load, or just cruising?

Its present under any amount of throttle, but gets worse under more load/as speed increases. I've been reading around online and it sounds transmission/differential related rather than exhaust because it only happens in 6th at certain speeds. Might end up taking it back to the dealer to get looked at.

From your edit it looks like you may have found another cause. I do agree with you, in 6th gear from 75 to 82ish I experience the same issue. It sounds like the exhaust valve opening and closing and sure is annoying! It varies with throttle input.

The dreadful rolling droan, that fades in and out, kinda like wooooow, wooooooow, wooooow…

Both of my cars exhibit the same issue, and I figured it was from the 4-wheel drive train. One car is LSD and the other is non LSD. They both sound the same. It is a little annoying especially without radio background noise. I figured it was just a characteristic of the drive train. So, since both cars have the same noise, I just accepted it as TADTS. The cars are really tight, no rattles. I really like these cars, they are fun to drive.

Sorry, I just unknowingly created a new and identical thread, not realizing this was here. That cyclic drone at 77mph is really awful. I'm gonna try to get some Toyota corporate guys on this. Seems like a lot of us have this going on. I think it's transfer case, but that's yet to be seen.
I would expect all GR’s to make this noise, not sure. If not it might can be narrowed down to a specific VIN range. My 2 cars are 12 numbers apart.
I tested this today. Mine doesn't have it.

My cars both exhibit this, and it’s on the highway with speed limits at 70mph or 75mph. You settle in at some speed between 70-80mph and you’ll get the rolling droan sound that fades in and out continuosly. My VIN’s are between 1950-1980.

My VIN is 1252. I have the performance pack. I set cruise to 78 mph and 80mph and didn't get drone either way.
